Latest news and notes:
- We had a team drop out this summer (Mother Puckers) and have had to juggle the schedule a bit (see schedule section). Two games called off tomorrow and one game called off Sunday. Games will be made up next week. We may also be tweaking the playoff schedule a tad.........more on that after I speak with a couple of captains.
- Congrats to Jesse Castillon and his fiance Berneice Perez who welcomed a new addition to the family!
- Recently, SoCal Street Hockey performed as the technical adviser on the pilot episode of a new Jon Heder (Napolean Dynamite) project being shopped to Disney XD (cable channel). Filming wrapped up at the end of July. Special note to Kerry Hew (Bully 1), Ashley Freeman (Bully 2), Joshua Niwa (body double for main Bully player), and Jake Ziegler from our youth program (Bully Goalie). We provided technical advice for the big street hockey game at the end of the show and the above-referenced players participated as the "bad guys" (Bully Bandits) during the hockey game. We're hoping the show gets picked up if for no other reason than to see our people running around pretending to be 7th graders! Name of the show is "Guilliver Quinn". Definitely an interesting concept. Fantastic experience!!
7.30.11
SoCal Street Hockey was asked to be the technical adviser on a new project for the Disney XD cable channel. Project was a pilot episode for a show entitled "Gulliver Quinn", starring Jon Heder (Napolean Dynamite/Blades of Glory fame) and helmed by Rob Schrab (Monster House). Filming wrapped up this past week, with post-production scheduled to be completed. Hoping that Disney execs pick-up the show so that we can see some of SoCal's own on television in 2012 (big street hockey game at the end of the pilot episode). More news to come.

5.11.11
Greetings All,
Schedule revisions have been updated and sent out.
As always, management is constantly looking for ways to strengthen our league. Each season we review our league rules/policies/procedures and, when applicable, make modifications designed to elevate the quality of game play for our participants. Rule changes were in the works for the upcoming season, but recent circumstances have dictated that we implement these changes immediately. Said changes are not intended to target any individuals or impact the outcome of games, rather they are intended to create a cleaner, safer and higher quality of game for our participants.
Rule changes........the following infractions will result in an automatic double-minor penalty (minimum):
- Slashing to any portion of a player's body.
Rule clarifications......the following infractions will result in a minimum of a minor penalty:
- Stick Check - Slashing at a player's stick. A legal poke-check is aimed at the blade of the stick with the intent of knocking the ball off the blade. Stick checking, on the other hand, is actually the slashing at the shaft of the stick (slashing penalty).
- Hooking - Not exclusive to the body. The hooking of the player's hands and/or turning the blade over and coming across the top of the opposing player's stick (pinning the player's stick/blade to prevent forward progress) is also considered hooking. Note: Lifting or popping up the stick from underneath is not a penalty.
- Digging at the goalie is a minor penalty. Once the goalie has the ball covered (i.e. glove covering the ball), a penalty will be assessed to any player blatantly digging at the goalie in an attempt to dislodge the ball from the goalie's control/coverage.
- Face-offs..........driving through the opposing player is an interference infraction. Slashing the official or catching an official/opposing player on the draw is also a minor penalty (must maintain control of the stick at all times).
- Taunting/trash-talking is a misconduct penalty.
- Player's leaving the bench or penalty box areas and entering the playing surface during an altercation will receive a game ejection and minimum 3-game suspension.
- Player's leaving the bench or penalty box areas and getting involved (grabbing or being in the middle of a scrum, even if attempting to brekup a fight) in an altercation will be suspended for the equivalent of one full season (9 games, not including playoffs).
- Players leaving the bench and engaging in a fight (indefinite suspension).
- Butt-ending an opponent or an official, regardless of intent, is an automatic major (this includes butt-ending a player on the draw).
We appreciate your understanding, patience and assistance as we work to better our league for you.

2.23.11
Weekend # 1 of the Sin City Shootout Street Hockey Tournament was a raging success. All divisions were extremely competitive, with close and exciting games being the staple of the event.
SoCal Chiefs won the B Division. Similar to what helped the Chiefs two years ago, the format for an odd number of teams worked against the Chiefs this time out as they were forced down into the B Division due to overall pool play results even though they provided the eventual A champs with their best game of the tournament (1-0). Fantastic tournament by the Chiefs...... unfortunately, we were unable to see what might have been with a Chiefs v Beaver Bats rematch in the A Division playoffs.
The CanAm Revolution squad, which pushed the Chiefs down into B because of the format, was a short-handed team made up of SoCal players (J.Gerdes, J.Andres, R.Miller, P.Beaulieu, T.Cox) and Canadian friends. The CanAm squad beat the San Diego Snipers in the quarterfinals and led the Beaver Bats (A Champs) for most of the first half of their semifinal game, but the short bench took its toll and CanAm fell to take 4th overall.
SoCal Kings captured the Rec Championship, but it was no easy ride. Down two goals to the Atlanta, GA team in the semifinals, the Kings rallied to score two goals in the final 1:21 of regulation to force the game into overtime (last goal score with 3 seconds left). Goal by Aaron Fougere 1:33 into OT sent the Kings to the finals (Robert Ramirez and Randall Miller on the assists). Kings went on to just edge out a 1-0 win over the Sun Gods (San Diego) to capture the championship.
The OC Snipers finished 2nd overall after pool play, but fell short in the quarterfinals to MASHA (SoCal's Jeff Fagerhaug and Matt Hopkins on the MASHA squad). The Vig had a strong tournament, but fell 1-0 to the Sex Panthers (San Diego) in the quarterfinals. The 9th Round Draft Picks and the L.A. Patriots each had very strong tournaments defensively, but didn't get the bounces on offense to advance deeper into the playoffs.
A very strong showing by ALL SoCal teams and players throughout the weekend!!

Fall '10 Season is in the books. It was by far one of the most competitive seasons we've seen in recent years. The only division that appeared to be a runaway saw the the final seed defeating #1 and #2 respectively, as the Watchmen captured the Bronze Division Championships. The Copper Division saw two teams in only their second seasons in the league square off in the finals. We saw the fastest goal recorded in SoCal Street Hockey history (3 seconds) starting off the 3rd game of the closely contested series, and proving to be the difference maker as the SoCal Kings edged out the L.A. Patriots for the title. With three of the four divisional series going the distance, and not one #1 seed winning the title, the playoffs proved to be the perfect conclusion to a fantastic season. Congrats to the following teams/individuals on a tremendous season:
Gold - Knights (over L.A. Chiefs - 3 gms)
Silver - The Vig (over Snipers - 2 gms)
Bronze - Watchmen (over Damage Inc. - 3 gms)
Copper - SoCal Kings (over L.A. Patriots - 3 gms)
Leading Scorers:
Gold - P.Budlong (Banana Hammocks)
Silver - S.Shinn (Dreiser St.)
Bronze - C.Hill (Renegades)
Copper - E.Ibarra (L.A. Patriots)
Leading Goaltenders:
Gold - D.Latorre (Crease Eaters)
Silver - S.Shinn (Fighting Irish)
Bronze - M.Creveling (Mustangs)
Copper - R.Miller (Monarchs)

As announced over the last couple of days, SoCal has been busy affiliating itself with a number of online retailers. The affiliate programs are intended to serve a number of purposes.
1. Make available to our SoCal Family quality products from the top retailers in the business.
2. Generate more traffic to the SoCal website.
3. Most importantly, we are looking for ways to generate potential revenue to offset the ever-growing costs of daily league operations, in the hope that we can keep registration costs as affordable as possible.
To that end, we don't want any member of the SoCal Family to feel obligated to make unwanted purchases. However, if you are in the market for merchandise advertised by the retailers we are affiliated with, we ask that you consider visiting their websites through our links as we are confident that we have affiliated with the top retailers on the internet.
11-15-10
We are proud to announce that we have become an affiliate of Lids.com, which offers the largest selection of hats on the market. If you are looking for a hat, click on one of the banners on our site and take in their vast selection. All purchases made through one of the SoCal links will return a small percentage of the sale back to SoCal.
11-14-10
SoCal Street Hockey is proud to announce that we have become an affiliate of The Fans Edge, which is the # 1 authentic sports merchandiser on the web. We have added The Fans Edge banners/links throughout the site and in our Store section for your convenience. If you are in the market for team apparel, accessories or collectibles, please click on one of the banners to direct you to their website. For every purchase made through a banner/link on the SoCal website, The Fans Edge has agreed to return a small percentage of the sale back to SoCal Street Hockey.

We've tweaked the website with a few new bells and whistles, and have added a new message board and storefront section to the site (see the navigation menu). We will continue to add more updated content to the website, so please visit often for the latest and greatest at SoCal Street Hockey.

The 1st Annual California Shootout Street Hockey Championship hosted by SoCal Street Hockey, and sponsored by the Los Angeles Kings, proved to be a phenomenal success. With teams from across California participating in the event, he competition was likely the closest we've seen at any shootout tournament. During pool play alone, all but 2 games ended in either a tie or 1-goal victory. The event was so evenly balanced that the first and last seeds heading into the playoffs had actually tied during a pool play game earlier in the event. In the end, the SoCal Snipers peppered the SoCal Misfits while on the power play for the final 3:16 minutes of the game, but were unable to put the ball in the net as the Misfits held onto the 1-goal lead to capture the 1st Annual California Shootout Championship!
Congrats to the following teams/players for a fantastic tournament:
Champions: SoCal Misfits
Finalists: SoCal Snipers
MVG: Jeremiah McDonald (Misfits)
MVP:
Paul Budlong (Misfits)

4-7-10
As part of the agreement to promote the California Shootout Street Hockey Championships, as well as our sport in general, the Los Angeles Kings have added a "street hockey" section to their website. This section is designed to promote the upcoming California Shootout Championship, as well as other future street hockey promotions hosted between the Los Angeles Kings and SoCal Street Hockey.
The Kings' website ( www.lakings.com/streethockey ) is currently featuring a promotional video with footage taken from the StreetLA Tournament we hosted with the Los Angeles Kings last August as poart of the Kings' inaugural Hockey Fest. This promotional video, along with an in-game voice-over not heard on the clip, was aired at the Staples Center during this past Saturday's Los Angeles Kings v Anaheim Ducks game, and will be aired again this Saturday during the Kings' regular season finale against the Edmonton Oilers.
Our growing relationship with the Los Angeles Kings is just one of many efforts SoCal Street Hockey is making to promote the sport of ball/street hockey on the west coast......and the great sport of hockey in general.
4-6-10

Event will be hosted at the Toyota Sports Center (Kings' practice facility) on the weekend of April 9-11, 2010. This will be a Friday - Saturday event, with the division winners being recognized that Saturday afternoon at the Kings' game. Stay tuned as more details will be released within the next several days.
SIN CITY SHOOTOUT: The 5th Annual Sin City Shootout Street Hockey Tournament hosted this past January was a tremendous success. A total of 39 teams from across North America descended upon Las Vegas, NV to participate over the course of the two weekend event hosted by SoCal Street Hockey (separate divisions hosted each weekend). As always, SoCal Street Hockey was represented strongly by numerous teams throughout the event, with the following teams also bringing home hardware:
SoCal Chiefs - B Division Champions
Child Please - Rec Division Champions
The Vig - Rec Division Finalists
Several of individual players were also recognized throughout during the event.........details to be posted in both the Tournament and Hall of Fame sections shortly. Thank you to all who participated and helped to make this our best event to date. Special thanks to the Los Angeles Kings and Demolition Hockey Gear for helping to sponsor the event.
SPRING '10 SEASON: Teams are set and the schedule for the upcoming season is being finalized. Games will begin this Sunday (March 7th). Schedule will be released and posted to the website within the next couple of days. If you are interested in participating on a team (or additional team), please contact us immediately as we have a number of teams still looking to fill a couple of spots. Divisional breakdown currently sits at 4 Gold, 7 Bronze and 7 Copper teams for the season.
ROBERT RICCIARDELLI: As a good number of you are already aware, a longtime participant and close friend of the league (Robert Ricciardelli) has pulled up roots and relocated to Oregon. Having a career that spanned approximately 20 years as a player and 8+ as a youth coach, Robert has played an important part in the growth and success of our programs. More importantly, Robert has grown to become a very close and trusted friend of most of the members of our SoCal Family. Robert sent the following email and asked that it be posted on the website:
To my second family.
Sorry to say this, but my time here at the rinks are finally over. I'm going to miss everyone and specially the kids. All the parents were great over the years. Helping out with the teams getting their future hockey hall of famers to the game on time. Watching them grow from not knowing how to skate in bronze to being the elite players in gold. It was a fun ride that I will never forget.
Special thanks to Terry Cox for allowing me to coach for so many years and keeping the league alive. Ed for all the score keeping, lights, nets, and just about everything that goes on at the rinks. Oh yeah, and the complaining about the equipment. Coaching for me was not about winning or losing. It was about the kids.
To all the foot league players. Thanks for the time we had together. I enjoyed playing in net and also playing out for most of you. Keep on playing hard and I will see all of you in Vegas next year.
It has been a great run........he will be missed, but will never stop being a part of the SoCal Family. We wish Robert nothing but happiness, health and prosperity as he begins the next chapter of his life. Who knows, maybe we'll see him heading an Oregon team at next years Sin City Shootout tournament? Best of luck Robert.....be good and stay in touch!!!!!!

Sin City Shootout Street Hockey Tournament is swiftly approaching. This event has become one of the most anticipated and attended single-rink events in the United States, with teams hailing from across North America to participate. As such, we are expecting over 50 teams to participate over the course of the two weekend event this January.
All SoCal members are welcome to participate, whether in fielding a team or jumping onboard and existing team. We will be forming teams in each of the 6 divisions, but there is a cap on team roster size and number of teams in each division due to limited floor space (issue with a single-rink event). That said we will be working on rosters in the coming weeks in order to secure as many spots as possible for SoCal teams/players in the event. If you are interested in participating in the event this January (team or individuals), please contact us immediately.
For further information regarding the event, you can go to our "Tournaments" section. We also have further information about the event (including the event's history) posted on the "Sin City Shootout Street Hockey Tournament" Facebook Group.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of Esrin Hedman, a member of our SoCal Family, who passed away on September 3rd at 5:29pm after fighting a tough but brief battle with a rare form of cancer. Esrin, best known as Ian Barnette's better half, was a friend of SoCal for years, helping out with league play when available, and helping with the organization and running of the Sin City Shootout since its inception. More so, Esrin was a good friend and a wonderful individual who will sincerely be missed by everyone who was blessed to have the opportunity to know her.
There is a Facebook Group in her name (Esrin Hedman's drive for the cure), where you can find out more information about Esrin, as well as information about the funeral services and reception, and potential fundraising efforts to help the family cover the cost of the services. If nothing else, it would be nice to drop by and leave a message on the group "Wall" as family and friends frequent the group often.
For those not on Facebook, the services will be held this Friday morning at 11:00am. The location will be the Holy Sepulcher Cemetery 7845 Santiago Canyon Rd, Orange, CA.
For more information, or to just drop a note to say hi to him, please contact Ian Barnette at Ian_Barnette@yahoo.com.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ian and Esrin's family.

On this day, SoCal Street Hockey celebrates its 8th year of existence. SoCal staff would like to thank all captains, players, officials, scorers and friends who have been a part of the league over the years, and who have helped us not only keep our doors open, but have helped to create such a strong, tight-knit community that we affectionately refer to as our SoCal Family. It's been a great eight years, and we're looking forward to an even better future. Again, thank you all to being a part of our extended family here at SoCal Street Hockey!!

The StreetLA street hockey tournament co-organized/hosted by SoCal Street Hockey and the Los Angeles Kings as part of the Kings' inaugural Hockey Fest was a blazing success (pun intended). Triple digit weather and games played on asphalt (increasing the "heat factor") took its toll on players physically throughout the day, but it did not affect the enthusuasm nor the attitudes of those in attendance. All-in-all, it was an amazing event that had both SoCal management and the Los Angeles Kings representatives discussing how to even better the event at next year's hockey event.
SoCal was represented strongly throughout the event with the Chiefs and Crease Eaters playing strongly in the Open Division, and the Snipers, 9th Round Draft Picks, Misfits, Bad Company and Fighting Irish all having strong showings in the Rec Division. The true "standout" team of the event was the 9th Round Draft Picks who finsihed 2nd overall in the Rec Division, losing to the San Diego Wildfire in an amazing overtime shootout.
It was an amazing event that is still generating a buzz amongst participants, fans and the event organizers, who are starting to talk about a West Coast Championships next Spring, in addition to the StreetLA event next summer.
Thank you to all players and captains for your participation and efforts in helping to make this such a special event. Special thank you to the officials, scorekeepers, and to both Ed Stone and Carrie Cox for their efforts in keeping the event organized, well run and "fun" for all involved. Lastly, thank you to Chris Crotty and the Los Angeles Kings for helping to make this event a reality. By far, this is the highlight event in the history of SoCal Street Hockey!!

Welcome to the new SoCal Street Hockey website. Here you will find a little bit of what our league has been about since SoCal Street Hockey took over management of our league in September of 2001. Scheduling updates and current player stats/team standings will be posted regularly, and the latest and greatest with SoCal Street Hockey will be found here in the news section.
You will note that we are missing a bit of information in our Hall of Fame section. A lot of data has been lost and we are doing our best to gather information as quickly as possible to fill in the gaps. If you have any information that can help, PLEASE contact us with that information so that we can get the HoF section completed.
Please take some time to look around and let us know your thoughts on the new SoCal Street Hockey website. Any/all suggestions are welcome. Thank you!!

Greetings,
I wanted to take a moment to announce some fantastic news regarding our league. Thanks to a few friends, and based on our success with the annual Sin City Shootout Street Hockey Tournament in Las Vegas, NV, the L.A. Kings Fan Development Team has reached out to us to help organize a street hockey tournament as part of their 2009 Kings Hockey Fest to be held on August 28-30, 2009. The Kings are reaching out to the community in a grassroots effort to promote the sport of hockey in the Southern California area.......what’s more grassroots than promoting the sport of street hockey as part of their event?
For the past several weeks we (SoCal) have been meeting/coordinating with the L.A. Kings Fan Development Team to help organize a tournament loosely based on the Sin City format. As this is a first-time event, Kings staff has decided to take things slow in an effort to build up an annual tournament that will become a staple of the annual Hockey Fest. Rules/format will be similar to those we employ for the Sin City Shootout event. There looks to be two divisions consisting of a 6-team Open Division and a 6-team Rec Division (expected to be Bronze skill level).
The current plan is to build two full rinks with sport court near the parking garage so that the event will be highly visible to the fans attending the Hockey Fest. Still not sure about the details regarding the rinks, but Kings’ staff is diligently working on putting it all together.
In addition to helping organize the event, SoCal Street Hockey will also be providing staffing for the event (referees, scorers and management). In return for the assistance with this event, the Kings Fan Development team is working to help promote our league and is trying to secure the use of the Toyota Center (Kings’ practice facility) for SoCal Street Hockey to host an annual West Coast Street Hockey Championship event sometime between the months of October and April (more on this to come).
We’ll be looking to help organize teams for participation in the event. I’ll also be reaching out to San Diego and San Francisco to see if they’d be interested in participating. Anyone looking to host a team independent of SoCal Street Hockey is welcome to do so………I just ask that you coordinate with me so as to avoid recruiting conflicts and so that we can keep SoCal teams as balanced talent-wise as possible (like we try to do for Vegas).
If anyone is interested in participating and/or heading up a team, please contact me asap. FYI.......they are expecting teams of 10-11 players for this first event for this 1-day event (tournament on August 29th only).
I’ve attached a copy of the flyer we have put together (note the SoCal logo) and a copy of the rules (basically our Sin City Shootout rules) if you are interested.
This is going to be the largest hockey event in the L.A. area since the NHL All-Star Game and NHL Experience were hosted in 2002. I’m hoping for a huge SoCal turnout.
Good things are happening at SoCal…….we’ll have more news regarding the event, as well as other exciting news involving SoCal Street Hockey in the coming weeks.
Regards,
TC
